State Requirements

Students in Colorado can begin drivers education as early as age 14 1/2 and can receive their permit as early as their 15th birthday. You then must hold your permit for a full-year before becoming eligible to take your license test. Here are the steps to getting your permit and license:

Take a 30-hour drivers education class.
Pass the written permit test.
Complete 6 hours of driving lessons with a state-certified driving school.
Keep your permit for a full-year (or until your 18th birthday).
Log a minimum of 50 hours of driving with a parent or guardian.
Pass the license test.

State Requirements

While most teens complete a 30-hour drivers education class to qualify for their permit, the state does allow students over the age of 15.5 to complete a 4-hour expanded driver awareness class instead.

Students who want to get their license before the age of 16 1/2 must take the following steps:

Take a 30-hour drivers education class.
Pass the written permit test.
Complete 6 hours of driving lessons with a state-certified driving school.
Keep your permit for a full-year (or until your 18th birthday).
Log a minimum of 50 hours of driving with a parent or guardian.
Pass the license test.

While we recommend that teens complete classroom and behind the wheel training prior to obtaining their license, the state requirements for drivers education no longer apply once a student turns 16. At that point, the legal requirement to get your permit and license is as follows:

Pass a written permit test.
Pass the written permit test.
Hold your permit for a full-year (or until your 18th birthday).
Log a minimum of 50 hours of driving with a parent or guardian.
Pass the license test.

State Requirements

It is wonderful that you are already interested in your teen's drivers education. You are welcome to register for a program at any time, but Colorado requires that students be 14 1/2 before beginning their classroom program.

To obtain your drivers license in Colorado, you will first need to pass a written permit test. Once you have your permit, you can sign up for your license test when you feel you're ready.

Available Class Options

The 30-hour drivers education class is available with a live instructor at all DriveSafe locations.

Important to note:

Thank you for your interest in DriveSafe's Online drivers education programs.

One unique feature is that if your student begins the online course and then decides they would prefer a live class, we can transfer them at no cost. If this occurs, State rules require that the student start the live class from the beginning.

Once your student completes the online course, please call us at 303-721-8881 to schedule a time to come in and take the written permit test.

Available Class Options

The 4-hour Expanded Driver Awareness Program (EDAP) is an abbreviated driver's education class available to students 15 1/2 and older, which will qualify eligible students to receive their permits. This class is offered as an in-center class and in a Zoom format with a live instructor.

Information to help you prepare

The drivers license test is a standardized road test that takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. Following the exam, the tester will provide feedback and then tell you whether you passed. Even experienced drivers sometimes fail, particularly if they have not stayed current on Colorado rules and regulations.
